our CLINIC DESIGN

a story about gratitude and loving where you work

Design Inspiration CONCEPTS

What makes you happy, feel at ease and gives you a sense of welcome? These were the questions that our design team asked me about how I would like our clinic to look. They asked if our clinic would be solely a productivity-focused design or an inspiration project. Since these opportunities do not come by often in one’s career, I decided to put a lot of thought into our clinic design because I wanted to create a special space for myself, my staff and my patients.

We have been a constant in most of our patients lives as they navigate through birthdays and other life-milestones, so I understood that it was important to build a clinic that makes our patients feel a connection, feel welcome and feel relaxed. I drew on experiences from my life for inspiration and also from reading various design books over the years on topics ranging from organizational psychology to even the Danish practice of Hygge. If we had to use four words to describe our concept it is “Bright, Modern, Welcoming, Warm”. This clinic is not only an expression of my aesthetics and personality but it is also a way to show gratitude to our patients and staff for their support over the years. I hope this helps to explain some design choices in our clinic.

ARCHED WINDOWS

It should be no surprise to anyone that if you want to become a dentist, you have to spend many years and endless hours in libraries studying. I have a particular affinity for really old libraries and their architecture. The concept of the arch is found in many old libraries and even religious places of worship. They are meant to bring in light, to inspire minds and hearts when you are sacrificing your time and life to gain real knowledge. I made an immediate connection to this concept when it was presented by our design team and it became an anchor point in our clinic design.

THE WARMTH OF BRASS

Choosing accent colours in our clinic was an important task as well. The golden brass colour accents you will see in the light fixtures in the clinic are inspired by brass instruments. I have always loved all brass instruments and their sound, having played trumpet in an orchestra in my youth. A dental clinic is like a group of orchestra players, each with their own part, working together to create a harmonious positive experience for its patrons. That concept and the welcoming warmth of the brass were chosen for these reasons.

THE SCANDINAVIAN APPROACH

I have always identified with simplicity and minimalism. The scandinavian aesthetics of simple monochromatic colour choices with a few pops of accents was always appealing to me. Bright, crisp whites on the walls, warm light wood tones on our flooring and accents of dark grey and brass.

GROUNDED WITH EARTH TONES

The last element in our design was to include colour with some earth tones. We decided to use our operatories and some furniture pieces to express these shades. Being a lover of hiking and the outdoors, dark green tones in our cabinetry with black tone accents and wood toned flooring are meant to imbue the environment with calm and are representative of being outdoors. Our dark green tweed furniture pieces calls back to our love of old libraries.

MODERN DESIGN WITH SAFETY IN MIND

One of the benefits of designing a new clinic in the middle of a pandemic is that we were able to put design elements in place that maximize your safety when you visit us for your oral health appointments.

HVAC DESIGN

Our clinic was designed with the latest pandemic-era standards. Ventilation and air returns are placed in every operatory so that each room does not rely on other spaces for air circulation.

FRESH AIR

Our ductwork was designed to bring-in enough fresh air to the clinic so that it meets medical/hospital grade standards. We also have strategically placed suction fans throughout the clinic to keep the stale air moving out and fresh air coming in.

HEPA FILTRATION

In additional to our ventilation, each of our operatories are outfitted with large HEPA air-filtration units. Our air-filters clean the air in each room from air-borne viruses, dust and other pollution.

Private Rooms

Each of our operatories are built with floor to ceiling walls and glass doors. This ensures that they are completely separate from the other rooms, which provides privacy and limits aerosol spread between rooms.
